Young, modern, research oriented… Founded in 1991, the University of Potsdam has firmly established itself within the scientific landscape. Nationally and internationally renowned scientists research and teach here at the largest university in Brandenburg. The University of Potsdam is successful in acquiring third-party funds, it demonstrates outstanding performance in technology and knowledge transfer, and it has a very service-oriented administration. Around 20,000 young people study at five faculties located within the university’s three campuses (Am Neuen Palais, Griebnitzsee and Golm). The University of Potsdam has a total of about 2,650 faculty and staff members and is an academic institution set in one of the most scenic surroundings in Germany.

 

The University of Potsdam, Faculty of Science, Institute for Physics and Astronomy, Experimental Quantum Physics Group is seeking to fill the following position:

 

Academic Staff Member

If possible, employment should begin early 2017. The contract is termed for three years. The Salary Scale is 13 TVL (Area east). The position is for 26,67 hours of work per week (66,67 %). Contracts are time-limited according to § 2 Abs. 1 Academic Fixed-Term Contract Law (WissZeitVG).

 

The position is intended to qualify for a doctoral thesis.

 

Funding for this research project and position is acquired in the framework of a Lichtenberg Professorship established by the Volkswagen Foundation. The project investigates molecular dynamics using short wavelength sources based on high harmonic generation. In addition, the graduate student will be embedded in the ongoing collaborations of our group at Free Electron Lasers like Stanford’s Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) and other facilities around the world. We expect that the applicant shows a high level of self-motivation and is willing to qualify in our scientific area.

 

Responsibilities:

  • design and execution of ultrafast experiments on molecules
  • presentation of the results in scientific papers and conference contributions

 

Qualifications

  • Completed academic studies at an institute of higher learning (Master degree or equivalent in physics, chemistry or engineering)
  • hands-on-attitude towards experimental setups
  • willing to work in a larger interdisciplinary team
  • strong communication skills
